A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I was on dilantin for 30 years... until my blood work came back showing my liver affected by the Dilantin. So neuro took me off of Dilantin asap! Since then 10 years Ive been on a roller coaster ride of seizure meds. 2 years no meds. Now seizures came back but with more dejavuu seizures. I am wondering if Dilantin a person can go back on it? Or is Dilantin not so safe anymore??

Hi Samantha

Keppra/levetiracetam Or Lamotrigine/lamictal
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am currently on Dilantin and does not seem to be processing through my body the same after taking it for 40 years and been having spikes in my phenytoin levels over 30. I also have been experiencing more side effects. My neurologist is suggesting to switch me to keppra/levetiracetam or lamotrigine/lamictal. Any thoughts or experiences?

It did make my gums bleed. I had to use listerine to make sure that I didn't get gum disease.

Dilantin
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I took Dilantin for a few years as a child. I'm not sure why my doctor switched me from Dilantin to Tegretol, but I'm assuming it's because I broke through on it. I really liked it, but I suppose what I'm on now is best for controlling my seizures.

Pregnancy And Epilepsy Medicines?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I'm on several epilepsy meds and have been warned that pregnancy could be dangerous and high risk. My seizures are still uncontrolled, mostly complex partial/secondarily generalized. Was wondering if any women suffering from uncontrolled seizures and/or on Dilantin, Vimpat and/or Lamictal have had children, and if so, what your experiences were? I want kids more than anything :(

I would not pay attention to a School GP, who I think told you to go "Cold Turkey". I know some people stop having seizures naturally. Find a Neurologist or Epileptologist who is very observant, can… read more
