I am currently on Dilantin and does not seem to be processing through my body the same after taking it for 40 years and been having spikes in my phenytoin levels over 30. I also have been experiencing more side effects. My neurologist is suggesting to switch me to keppra/levetiracetam or lamotrigine/lamictal. Any thoughts or experiences?
Same here.
The reason is because Dilantin has long term side effects
I'm actually on both...
Together they work great for me, not every medication is for everyone. Just like side effects. They affect people differently. Keppra is one of those meds that can cause random anger outbursts, or can affect weight gain or loss... Due to keppra it's hard to stay at a steady weight. I'll lose, and gain.
Lamictal can change your appetite, eating more or less...
It kind of helps as a mood stabilizer. Well at least that's what my neurologist says...
I'm telling you MY experiences. Like i stated, everyone is different..
You can always ask for samples before taking the plunge.
I've been on Trileptal for 20yrs and have no issues. I'm prescribed the daily max of 1200mgs
i tried lamictal but didnt work. i am on keppra for about 15-20+ years (and counting) with 1 other anti seizure med. keppra side effects (for me) is tired, dizzy when i turn really fast, and mood swings. i take a couple of vitamins and one of um was milk thistle (to counteract the keppra).
4 weeks ago one neuro put me on Dilantin and last week during my stay at the hospital for 2 weeks eegs, took me off it.
Didn’t say why for the long term side affects
