I never thought about that! I just recently had my remaining teeth pulled and had two implants put in to secure my bottom denture. Will have both upper and lower dentures. Now I am kind of worried! Too late now though! Ha!
It would be a good idea to consult with your dentist on this before proceeding.
@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , I can’t speak on implants, but when I sleep I wear a mouth guard that my dentist makes me to specifically fit my mouth perfectly. I don’t know if your insurance would cover & I can’t remember if my current insurance helped pay any part of my current mouth guard, but it might have cost me about $400 & yes it’s expensive but for me it’s worth it. I also have TMJ where I grind my teeth when I sleep & so my mouth guard helps protect my mouth for that & if I have a seizure in my sleep. Overtime mouth guards do age & so every now & then I have to get a new one. The over the counter ones are to loose for me. Good luck. Your friend in Texas, Becky
Great question! Epilepsy can affect oral health in several ways, and it's important to be aware of the risks before any dental procedure, including implants.
Seizures can cause dental injuries such as:
- Broken or missing teeth
- Fractured jawbone
- Tooth enamel wear from grinding (bruxism)
- Tongue or cheek biting
