To put my question in context: I only have seizures when I sleep. I only have them every couple of months. They only started several years ago. I wear a mouth guard when I sleep but the one I am currently wearing does not stop me from biting my tongue nor does it mitigate or minimize damage to my tongue. After my last seizure a month ago my tongue looked like cottage cheese and it took almost a month for it to heal. I have tried several different types and brands and none have worked. I… read more
Becky - Thank you. I will make a trip into town next week and start hitting all the dentists/orthodontists to see if anyone can help.
You could get a custom mouth guard or cheaper month guard. It mad provide some protection but it won't stop the jaw clench it you get that. Either way its probably something that you try and see what happens.
Thank you - never thought of that
Have you tried a chin strap. This keeps you teeth in place lessening the likelihood of tongue biting. Talk to a CPAP service provider they may have some suggestions ,
@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , I have TMJ & it was recommended several years ago that I start wearing a mouth guard. My Dentist makes me one specifically to fit me & it’s so much better than the over the counter ones. It stays in place when I sleep. Only downside is that eventually it ages & starts breaking a little & I have to eventually get another one. I think I’m on my third one or so now, so mine have lasted a long time. But when I didn’t have any insurance, I went & got some from the grocery store but they were just too lose. But there’s bound to be a Dentist around you that can help make a mouth guard specifically fitted for you. You don’t want the mouth guard so thin that it just feels like you have teeth in there & you won’t have any protection. My local Dentist office apparently started trying to make mouth guards there at their office & I let them know that it just felt too thin, like there wouldn’t be any protection & so they sculpted me another one & sent it off to be made at the original company they’ve been using to make my mouth guards. But when I didn’t have insurance for a new mouth guard I had a seizure in my sleep 2 different nights in a row or close to it & the first time I bit my bottom left lip & it was so numb, swollen & sore that I went to my Family doctor but she could only recommend ice for the swelling & then another night I bit my tongue in my sleep & I had never done that before. After those episodes, it sure did make me appreciate my mouth guard & how much it protects my mouth when I sleep cause though it’s for my TMJ to help protect me with that, it sure does a lot more. Keep checking with other dentist offices & let them know you have Epilepsy & that you need a mouth guard. See if your dental insurance will cover that stuff cause if not, it could be expensive but it’s worth it. If you have any questions feel free to ask me. Try even going to www.Google.com & looking up dentist offices who make mouth guards or mouth guards for epileptics, etc. I hope you can get one soon. Your friend in Austin, Texas, Becky
