Members responded to a question about teeth grinding during sleep due to anxiety, with many sharing that this is indeed common among people with epilepsy and that dentists can often detect it just by examining your mouth. Several members recommended custom-fitted mouth guards from a dentist as the most protective option, though some noted challenges like saliva buildup, cost, and discomfort, while over-the-counter versions were mentioned as a more affordable alternative. A recurring theme was the importance of talking to both a dentist and neurologist, as untreated grinding can lead to serious damage like cracked teeth, tongue injuries, and even broken mouth guards during seizures.

I’ve had mouth guards I wear for years but not due to seizures but definitely can’t do without them. Yes, definitely ask neurologist hope she can send a referral to your dentist. Dentist I know are expensive but what isn’t nowadays. 😍

William here ., I be having mostly nocturnal seizures ., so often I be waking up a bloody mess ., mostly I bite my tongue or the insides of my mouth ,, with CIRE seizures I have bad chills called rigours .. I chatter and grind my teeth so hard sometimes I be breaking them .. once I bite my tongue quite badly and be going to hospital for stitches .. dissolving kind so they disappear .. cannot use mouth guard for 2 reasons .. first .. fear that the violence of the severe teeth rigours chattering break it and I choke .. second, the saliva that build up I might aspirate .. as I have a wee right lung half size of left that be covered with scarring from many lung collapse ., so I tend to drool copiously during seizures and have aspirated that before .. and yes I did fracture a mouth guard .. and broke tooth as well .. woke up in a pool of blood and drool .. thankfully did not aspirate .. really mussed the bed though 😢 .. hugs from William and Jen💜💙🕊

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , I have TMJ where I grind my teeth when I sleep & so my dentist made a mouth guard to specifically fit my mouth. The mouth guards my dentist makes me, I don’t think my insurance helps to pay for any of & so it can be a little pricey but it can protect your some & so I think it’s worth it. Even though I wear my mouth guard, I still find that I’ve bit my cheeks sometimes. Without the mouth guard, when one had broken, I had a seizure & bit my bottom lip really bad & then another night I had a seizure & bit my tongue. That showed me that my mouth guard helps protect my mouth due to my teeth grinding, but also if I have a seizure. Take care. Your friend in Texas, Becky
