That has happened to me multiple times! My former neurologist, who retired, always wanted me to take brand name meds. My new doctor allows generic Lamictal and Topamax. There is no generic available for Fycompa, so that one is not an issue yet. In looking at the patent info for Fycompa, the earliest date for a generic is going to July 2026. The price on Fycompa is preposterous! These drug companies hide behind the excuse of "research and development" for the prices.... All you have to do is look at the salaries of their CEOs - $950,000 to $6.7 million in 2020. That speaks volumes.

so now instead of Lamictal you're taking Lamotrigine, & instead of Topomax taking Topiramate. I was on both of those generic drugs before. I was only on them a few days before my seizures started occuring more frequently. So my Doctor wrote a letter to the insurance company saying as to why she wanted me on the brand name meds. She enclosed documents showing the increased number of E.R. visits due to number seizures I was having. After that I didn't have a problem getting the brand name meds. That changed back in 2020 when my wife & I moved from Upstate NY here to Statesboro, Ga. My wife is originally from Augusta, GA, but couldn't find a property we could afford to rent/ buy at the time, which is how ended up here.
