Yes, stroke-related brain damage can absolutely cause seizures. When a stroke occurs, it either blocks blood flow to the brain or causes bleeding in the brain. Both types can lead to seizures, though bleeding strokes carry a higher risk. The damage and scar tissue left behind by a stroke can disrupt the brain's normal electrical signals, which can trigger seizures. These can happen in two ways:

- Early onset – A seizure occurs within the first 24 hours to two weeks after a stroke
- Late onset – A seizure occurs more than two weeks after a stroke, sometimes months or even years later as scar tissue develops When someone has repeated stroke-related seizures, this can lead to a diagnosis of epilepsy. In fact, stroke is one of the leading known causes of adult-onset epilepsy, accounting for nearly half of newly diagnosed cases in adults. It's worth knowing that if a seizure lasts longer than five minutes, or three seizures happen in a row without regaining consciousness in between, that is a medical emergency. Always seek immediate help in those situations.
