Why did seizures start at age 62?

Developing epilepsy later in life is actually more common than many people realize. Older age is a known risk factor for epilepsy and seizures.

The most common cause of new epilepsy in older adults is stroke. Strokes can damage brain tissue and disrupt normal electrical activity, leading to seizures even months or years after the stroke occurs.

Other potential causes in older adults include:
* Brain changes from conditions like Alzheimer's disease
* Brain tumors
* Brain infections such as encephalitis or meningitis
* Previous head injuries that may have occurred earlier in life
* Metabolic imbalances affecting brain function

Sometimes healthcare providers can't identify a specific cause, which is called "epilepsy of unknown cause." This happens in about 50 percent of people with epilepsy. As medical testing continues to improve, doctors hope to better understand these cases.

If you haven't already, it's important to work with your neurologist to investigate what might have triggered your seizures. They may recommend imaging tests or other evaluations to look for underlying causes that can be addressed.
