. I have had doctors tell me “oh that’s not safe to have a child with epilepsy” and others doctors say “seizure medication won’t harm the child”

From the way I understand it is there are some medications that are and some that aren’t good for the child but there are also medications that hasn’t been studied enough.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , I’m 47 & when my Pediatric Neurologist started me on my Depakote, probably in my mid to late teens, give or take, he said to make sure to let him know if I ever wanted to have a baby because the Depakote could possibly harm the baby. I think I have read the side effects say that as well. I’m still on the Depakote & never had kids & not married & still live at home with my Mom & stepdad & am going through menopause. I’ve read other stories on here of ladies who had children without any problems. It’s just best to plan ahead, just like my Pediatric Neurologist wanted me to do with him & that way he could have put me on a safer medication if needed. I see you’re on Topamax, my Pediatric Neurologist had tried me on that but it made me lose to much weight & for years I had also been on Trileptal with the Depakote. So try to find an experienced Neurologist who has been around for a while who might be more familiar with this issue. You might also do your own research on www.google.com to see what you can find out about a medication being safe or not for you to be on during pregnancy. You could also contact your local Epilepsy Foundation & let them know your situation about getting mixed answers from doctors & ask if there’s a Neurologist who they could recommend for you to go see who might be able to help you more. You can look up your local Epilepsy Foundation at www.epilepsy.com. Good luck. Your friend in Texas. Becky
