The only way you can find out is have someone you know apply for the job and interview. If they mention they aren't hiring when they inquire about a job, you'll know then if they were lying.
If you have doubt in or against a former company that makes you think they are saying false information then look into it. Look at the company website for further information if they are hiring.
Something else you can do is look at the company staff situation as many companies are laying off employees due to the economy situation taking place.
This is a horrible economy for every business owner not just corporations or certain industries. Something to consider when doing your research on this issue to find out more.
