Members responded to a question about whether skipped or irregular periods are common for women with seizures, with many sharing that yes, their cycles have been affected in various ways. Several members described links between their epilepsy medications and hormonal changes, including longer periods, skipped cycles, and conditions like PCOS or fibroids, with some noting that their cycle regularity actually helps them gauge how well their seizures are controlled. A recurring theme was that individual experiences vary widely based on age, medication type, and personal health history, and that speaking with a doctor is an important step.

Yea. A whole three months went by before I had a period last year. Definitely gave hubby a scare 😂 On average my cycle can vary from 5 - 9 weeks. It happens and stops whenever it likes. I know my seizures are under control when my cycle has a routine. Also some meds can cause cycle changes.

Is it common for women with seizures to have irregular or skipped menstrual cycles?

Yes, irregular cycles can occur in women with epilepsy. One pattern specifically recognized is called anovulatory cycles, which are times when periods are missed. This is actually one of the three phases when catamenial epilepsy (seizures related to the menstrual cycle) can occur.

Hormonal fluctuations play a significant role in both seizures and menstrual cycles. Estrogen and progesterone levels naturally change throughout your cycle, and these same hormones affect seizure thresholds. When these hormones are out of balance, it can impact both seizure activity and menstrual regularity.

About 42 percent of women with epilepsy experience catamenial epilepsy, which means their seizures are influenced by their menstrual cycle. The relationship between hormones, seizures, and cycle regularity is complex and interconnected.

If you're experiencing skipped periods, it's worth discussing with your healthcare provider, as they can help determine whether it's related to your epilepsy, medications, or other factors.
