@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member It could be more then a Focal aware seizure. It sounds more like a aura that has progressed become impaired then its moved into the post ictal phase. Normally if it's just a Focal aware you don't get a post ictal period.

Why does it take hours before my brain feels normal again?

It definitely sounds like a Focal Aware Seizure I have, but it takes hours for my brain to get back to normal.

What you're describing sounds like focal aware seizures, which are exactly what you're experiencing. During these seizures, you remain conscious and aware of what's happening, even though it can feel very strange or disconnected.

That "out of body" sensation is actually a recognized symptom of auras. A MyEpilepsyTeam member described it as "a strong, out-of-body feeling that I've been here, done this before. Followed by a feeling of foreboding and anxiety."

During focal aware seizures, you might experience:
* Feeling "frozen" or unable to move
* Intense emotional feelings like fear or joy
* Déjà vu sensations
* A "rising" feeling in your stomach
* Visual disturbances
* Unusual smells or tastes

The key characteristic is that you remain conscious throughout and can remember what happened afterward, which matches your experience perfectly. These auras are actually seizures themselves - they're focal aware seizures that sometimes progress into more severe seizures. The fact that you're conscious during them is what makes them "aware" seizures.

If you have warning time during your auras, this can be helpful for safety. You might be able to get to a safe place, lie down, or alert someone nearby. Talk with your neurologist about developing a seizure action plan for when you feel an aura coming on.
