How did you discover you had tonic-clonic seizures when the first one went unnoticed?

It's actually quite common for people to be unaware of their first tonic-clonic seizure, especially if it happens when they're alone or during sleep. Many people only realize they've had a seizure when a second one occurs in front of witnesses or medical staff, just like in your situation at the emergency department.

Tonic-clonic seizures involve two distinct phases:
* The tonic phase - muscles stiffen and the person loses consciousness
* The clonic phase - rhythmic jerking movements occur

After the seizure ends, there's a recovery period where confusion, tiredness, headaches, or body soreness are common. These aftereffects might be the only clue that a seizure happened if no one witnessed it.

Some people experience warning signs called auras before a tonic-clonic seizure - unusual sensations like strange smells, visual changes, or feelings of déjà vu. However, not everyone gets these warnings, which means seizures can happen suddenly without any advance notice.

Having that second seizure in the ED was actually helpful for getting a proper diagnosis, even though it must have been frightening. It allowed medical professionals to witness what was happening and begin appropriate treatment.

I had taken all known Anti Seizure Medications, combinations and dosages. I decided to have many tests. I decided to have the Temporal Lobectomy on the right side. They did not stop, but I was told them not happening would stop damage on the left side. That is my Dominant side. .They found a site in my Occipital Lobe years later. That would affect my ability to see so did not happen.

I had epilepsy for 40 years before I found out I was a candidate for surgery. Last Thursday was 25 years since I had a temporal lobectomy and I have been seizure-free ever since.
