Your Dr. Is trying to to find out it he/she can find the right combo of medications. If seizures aren’t under controlled, the Dr. May up your dosages or add another medication. If the Dr. Can’t find the right combo , he/she may take the alternative steps of trying ( with your permission ) brain surgery, VNS, DBS or RNS..

I’m on 5 meds and have the DBS implant . I still seizure, but not as much as I did before the DBS implant.

It doesn't really mean something serious it's just part of the treatment. The way they class it is you have a first-line drug and then a second-line drug. Not everyone needs a second-line drug but a lot of people will. It doesn't mean to much though. It's only once the drugs aren't working properly that's when things become an issue.

I’ve always been on multiple medications at the same time for seizures.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , If someone has more than one type of seizure, then it’s possible that might be why they’re on more than one medication. I remember when I was a kid I was on 3 at one time but for years now I’ve been on at least 2 medications at one time. As a kid I had petit mal seizures, now known as absence seizures. For several years now, I’ve had complex partial seizures & nocturnal seizures where I have seizures in my sleep. For around 15 years or so I was on Depakote & Trileptal but I began seeing my current Neurologist in November 2019 & she took me off of my Trileptal & put me on Vimpat because she said long term use of Trileptal can possibly hurt the liver. One medication might not be enough to help you. Your friend in Texas, Becky
