Leg And Arm Jerking
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Does anyone else have sudden twitchy movements in legs after taking their medications? 99.9 % of mine are in my left leg. I have been noticing them for years now but just have not thought much about about. I take 3 medications. Keppra 4000 mg, lamictal 800 mg, and trileptal 1200 mg. All in divided doses of course. Seems like it may have started after i began taking trileptal. But i am not for sure. Or maybe a combo of all three. Its not like repetitive. More like maybe 3 or 4 times unless i am… read more

What was your primary meds, first add-on and second add-on? And ball park timeline on when you began taking each (if you have an idea)?

I have been on 1800mg for about 19 years. Recently added 400mg Lamictal, around 12/2018. The Lamictal was intended to replace the Trileptal once it reached levels the doctor was happy with. However, due to “silent seizures” detected by NeuroPace, the doc decided to keep me on both, Trileptal and Lamictal.

Meds taken twice a day, morning and night (12 hours apart). I do not experience twitching but this what my day is normally like...morning dose taken, about 30-45 minutes later, then my vision begins to blur (sometimes to the point I cannot see anything clearly. Most of the tome balance becomes so messed up that it is best I sit in my chair and wait for all this too pass. Sometimes I have severe headaches. When that happens, I take 1000mg of Tylenol and apply Arnica to temples and forehead l. Most of the time the headache is gone in about an hour but dizziness/balance lasts about 2-3 hours sometimes longer.

Nighttime meds, include meds mentioned above as well as 30mg Citalopram (for depression) been taking that since 06/2016. No noticeable side effects from that. The dizziness/balance issue happens again at night for another couple hours.

While I experienced insomnia, lack of appetite, short temper, etc with the Trileptal as stand alone drug, the side effects have increased so much that I asked the doc to switch the Lamictal.

So starting next week, with begin taking third med (not sure of top of my head what it is) once level with third med, will began to get off Lamictal slowly. So pretty soon I will be having side effects worse than now but hopefully, will be back to two meds soon and the new med will play nice the Trileptal.

Being on the third med as well as the other two, I may begin to experience leg twitching.

Will update soon. Wish you the best.

I had a leg twitch when I started trileptal (I was taking them 3 times a day) it always happened after my lunch time one so I only take them morning and night now, I’m on 1050mg currently and 375mg of Lamotrigine (trying to decrease) and only happens every so often now x

My answer to you is that it is my hands that are bad. I can't pick anything up with one hand. I always have to use two hands. Right now I have to use a Walker so I don't fall down.
I wish you the best now and in the future.
