Post-seizure vomiting can be a real concern, especially when it comes to keeping anti-seizure medication down. If vomiting happens shortly after taking medication, it's important not to automatically take another dose โ too much can be dangerous.
A MyEpilepsyTeam member shared: "I vomited this morning and I'm concerned my meds went with it." It's a more common worry than you might think! Here's a general guide on what to consider:
- If you vomited within a few minutes of taking medication, your neurologist may advise retaking the dose
- If an hour or more has passed, they may suggest waiting until the next scheduled dose
- If you can see your medication in the vomit, let your doctor know โ it helps them decide next steps
Always contact your neurologist for specific advice rather than guessing. Nausea is also a known side effect of many anti-seizure medications, which can lead to vomiting. Some people find relief by asking their doctor about anti-nausea medication. A MyEpilepsyTeam member noted their doctor prescribed an antiemetic beforehand, which helped significantly.
Taking medication with food, eating smaller meals, and avoiding heavy or fried foods may also help reduce nausea.
