I had a seizure not long after my alarm went off this morning. Yesterday I didn't feel quite right and I had these jerks I randomly get sometimes, its always my left leg and my left hand. Could that be a sign that im going to have a seizure or is it just a side effect of having epilepsy?

Members connected over the question of whether random twitches and jerking could signal an upcoming seizure, with many sharing that these movements are often related to epilepsy itself or medication side effects. Several members offered helpful insights, including the possibility of myoclonic epilepsy, the importance of magnesium and B vitamins, and the value of contacting an epilepsy nurse or neurologist if symptoms continue. A recurring theme was that poor sleep is a major trigger for seizures, and staying in close contact with medical teams to adjust medications is key to better management.

What you're describing — those sudden jerks in your left leg and left hand — sounds like it could be myoclonic seizures. These are brief, sudden muscle jerks that can happen on one side of the body and are a recognized part of epilepsy.

The timing is also worth noting. Myoclonic jerks often happen shortly after waking up, which lines up with your experience of having a seizure not long after your alarm went off. As for whether they can be a warning sign — yes, they can be. For some people, myoclonic jerks act as a kind of early signal that a larger seizure may follow, especially around waking hours. It's not guaranteed, but the pattern you're describing is something worth paying close attention to.

Here's what's helpful to track and share with your neurologist:

- When the jerks happen (morning, evening, random times)
- How often they occur
- Which body parts are affected (you've already noticed left leg and hand — great observation!)
- Whether a bigger seizure follows and how soon after

This kind of detail can really help your doctor fine-tune your treatment plan. If the jerks are becoming more frequent or are consistently followed by seizures, that's definitely a conversation to have with your care team sooner rather than later.

If it continues speak to your Epilepsy nurse or Nuerologist as it could be Myaclonic Epilepsy. Alot of us have more than 1 type of Epilepsy.

I know what you mean, when I dont get enough sleep it triggers my seizures. What medication are you if you dont mind me asking? My epilepsy nurse has mentioned adding brivaracetam which is making me nervous as its very similar to Keppra and that was bloody awful. I would never go on keppra ever again.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member - I have them almost as an early warning sign that I am not taking care of my self THAT DAY. It's usually a sleep thing. Sleep is SO DARN IMPORTANT. Before I received the proper seizure cocktail, they were much more frequent.

They added Magnesium into my daily intake! They put me on telemetry and noted my seizures and sleep apnea! I try to stay busy!
