A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Was having Auras a couple of weeks ago. Think it was from some herbal supplements I was using. Stopped them and the Auras stopped. Then yesterday and this morning I had a really strange episode. Felt just like when an Aura is starting…..funny feeling that rises up into my chest where it fells cold or sometimes warm and I feel really anxious. But a full blown Aura didn’t happen. Wondering what this could be or what might have caused it.

Members shared their personal experiences with auras in response to a question about what causes aura-like episodes, with many agreeing that auras are seizures in themselves and can serve as helpful warnings before a larger seizure occurs. Several members highlighted the importance of being cautious with herbal supplements and vitamins, noting that even natural products can interact with seizure medications and lower the seizure threshold. A recurring theme was the value of tracking symptoms and triggers through journaling, staying in close contact with a neurologist, and leaning on loved ones for support and safety.

Both my neurologist and my gp have told me that I’m not allowed to take anything- vitamins, herbal supplements etc without asking them first. Apparently they have ingredients in them that can either lower or up the dosage of some epilepsy meds ( and other meds). Depending on how stressed I am is how often I’ll have auras. Some will progress to my usual tonic clonic seizures while others just leave me completely drained. I’m like a combination of Leslie and Jason’s descriptions of auras. But auras are seizures in their own which can progress to bigger seizures

I have auras many times. I take natural vitamins and don’t have the same issue. It is different for everyone. It all depends on what your body needs.

Most tend to call it a warning- In my own perspective, an Aura is simply a seizure very slowly coming on to the point where you notice it before you lose consciousness.

I am now taking 5 mgs. Benzaprine twice a day. It is a muscle relaxant to relieve an aching back. My Neurologist said this could make having a seizure more likely, to remember to take my meds.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member I would probably try logging the aura plus the any events you can think of in the lead up to it. Generally the more information you can get the better.
