It really comes down to what you take and what you need. Some people need them along with the AED meds but its mainly to help with problems that come up due to the meds or side effect issues. They don't really help with seizures.

Are there any supplements or vitamins that can safely complement lamotrigine for seizure reduction?
Vitamin D supplementation shows promise for people with epilepsy. Research has found that increasing vitamin D intake helped reduce seizures by a median of 40 percent. Many people taking antiepileptic medications are vitamin D-deficient, as some anti-seizure medications can disrupt how the body processes this vitamin.
Vitamin D may help protect against seizures by strengthening anticonvulsive effects in the body. However, it's crucial to talk with your doctor before starting any supplements, as too much vitamin D can cause side effects like nausea, muscle weakness, and kidney stones. It can also interact with medications. Beyond supplements, some dietary approaches may help with seizure control. The ketogenic diet (high-fat, low-carb) has shown effectiveness, particularly for drug-resistant epilepsy. For adults, a modified Atkins diet may be an option if seizures remain frequent despite medication.
Always inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and herbal remedies you use. Never adjust your lamotrigine dosage or add supplements without medical guidance, as this ensures your treatment plan remains safe and effective.
