I found out my absent seizures are due to years of a very abusive relationship in my early 20's. Friends and family started noticing seizures after I finally left him. He went to prison for a couple of years but sadly I'm the one stuck with a lifetime of issues.
I was born with it, but nobody to my knowledge has had it in my family!
@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , I’m 47 & have had seizures since the 2nd grade after hitting my head on the monkey bars. For years we didn’t know for sure if my seizures started because of hitting my head on the monkey bars, or could’ve had anything to do with the fact that my Dad had seizures or both. Then in 2023 or 2024, at a counseling office that I was going to, they had some kind of testing machine where they could tell if my seizures came from a head injury or if I was born with them & they said that it was a head injury. My seizures aren’t as bad as my Dad’s were. My Dad had bad grand mal seizures. Sometime after my parents were married my Dad started having seizures & no one ever knew what caused them to start. Dad passed away in 2012 from cancer. Your friend in Austin, Texas, Becky
I was unofficially born with Epilepsy. But wasn’t diagnosed until a month before turning 2yrs.
My Epilepsy is not from genetics either.
Doctors say my seizures are mostly due to asphyxiation at birth where I got no blood or oxygen. I also had a traumatic head injury before I was 2 years old that knocked me unconscious. My seizures started when I was 10 years old. Nobody else in my whole family has even experienced a seizure.
@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member - I am SO sorry to hear of the abuse you suffered. You need 2 things now 1) a really good Dr plus 2) good friends to talk with. This MyEpilepsyTeam site is a good place to meet & talk with others who have fought (& sometimes beat) epilepsy. Keep the faith.
