We all live with stress, whether it be our own or stuff around us. You on the other hand are living through a tsunami, related/unrelated to yourself. Make that time before bed for yourself. Lock the bathroom door and put on your headphones and close out what’s around you. For your own space of control for you. Or whenever/wherever. You will find comfort dealing with everything else, without comfort for yourself. There sounds like allot on your plate. And sometimes you need to clear your plate before you start again. With compassion, do something for you.

Best wishes,
Suzanne

How can stress-related seizures be managed when you're dealing with family health challenges?

It's completely understandable that you're trying to protect your family during this difficult time with your granddad. However, hiding your seizures might actually put you at greater risk and add more stress to everyone later.

Stress is one of the most common seizure triggers for people with epilepsy. When you experience stress, your body releases cortisol, a hormone that can promote seizure activity. The challenging situation with your granddad is creating ongoing stress for your whole family, including you.

Here are some ways stress-related seizures can be helped:

* Managing stress through relaxation techniques and guided meditation
* Maintaining consistent sleep patterns (sleep deprivation is another major trigger)
* Taking medications as prescribed without missing doses
* Avoiding alcohol
* Working with your healthcare team to adjust treatment if needed

It's important to know that while stress contributes to seizures, managing it effectively can reduce breakthrough seizures. Many MyEpilepsyTeam members have found that addressing stress helps improve their seizure control.

Rather than hiding your seizures, consider letting at least one trusted family member know what's happening. This keeps you safer and prevents the added stress of worrying about keeping secrets. Your health matters too, especially during difficult family times.

Would you be open to talking with your healthcare provider about stress management strategies that could help during this challenging period?

Yes. I think so. Last week my brother had to get a PET scan because Dr saw spots on his lungs and I had 3 seizures. 1 before and 2 after. He’s ok but my mother went through a horrible time with cancer ( breast and lung) and I just couldn’t get it out of my head.
