Yes, I have heard of that. It is mainly because some people forget their appointment or get their appointment time wrong. This keeps us up on our toes to be on time, or else you pay. I do not intend to pay - I am always on time if not ahead of my time..

I'm not to sure what would happen in the US health system as it is very different to Aus but over here in the public system you go on a waiting list for then they book the appointment. From there the standard is you can either cancel and reschedule or go to it otherwise you would fall off the list and it creates problems.

In the case you did have a seizure and couldn't go I would say it should be fine assuming either the hospital or yourself check in to see what's going on. It is part of the protocol that the hospital does check in on people with epilepsy if they don't show up as its technically considered high risk.

Question: What should someone do about medical appointment penalties when they miss an appointment due to having a seizure?

This is a valid concern that many people with epilepsy face. The best approach is to:

1. Contact your healthcare provider's office as soon as possible after the missed appointment
2. Explain that you had a seizure which prevented attendance
3. Ask about their policy regarding medical emergencies
4. Request a waiver of any cancellation fees due to the medical circumstance
5. Document the seizure and missed appointment for your medical records Most medical offices understand that people with epilepsy may have unexpected seizures. It's recommended to:

• Discuss this possibility with your healthcare team during a regular visit
• Ask about their specific policies regarding emergency cancellations
• Get documentation from your neurologist about your condition
• Keep emergency contact numbers handy to notify the office quickly

Remember that maintaining good communication with your healthcare providers is key to managing these situations effectively.
