Yes, Depakote (divalproex sodium) can contribute to bone density loss. The medication has been shown to promote the activity of osteoclasts, which are cells that break down bone tissue. This effect can occur even when taking normal prescribed doses. To help protect your bone health while taking Depakote, consider discussing these options with your healthcare team:

• Regular monitoring of side effects
• Taking vitamin D supplements if recommended
• Reviewing your current dosage
• Exploring alternative medication options if needed

Additionally, weight-bearing exercises and adequate sun exposure (for vitamin D) can help maintain bone density, but always check with your doctor about safe exercise options.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , I’m 47 & I bet I’ve been on Depakote since my mid teens, give or take, then when trying to find a new Neurologist, after seeing my Pediatric Neurologist for almost 30 years & he started me on the Depakote, but this other Neurologist on the first visit asked me on my first visit with him if I was aware that long term use of Depakote could possibly cause Osteoporosis & I said no & so he had me do a bone density test & that showed that I have Osteopenia in my left hip & he recommended that I take Vitamin D & continued me on the Depakote. My current Neurologist still has me taking Vitamin D & still has me taking Depakote, twice a day, 750mg in the morning & 500mg at night. I had been on the same Depakote dosage for so many years of 1 500mg tablet twice a day without any problems & then suddenly in December 2018 I got a twitch in my shoulder & later that evening I had trouble breathing & whatever else & so we went to the hospital but they claimed I was just dehydrated & as months went by my arms got this awful shaking, my right leg shook sometimes & other symptoms. I didn’t have any insurance & so I couldn’t just go to the doctor & didn’t know about some services available at the time, basically, we ended up going to my Family clinic in May 2019 & my doctor saw that I hadn’t had bloodwork done in almost a & so we did that & it showed that my Depakote level was at 135 & normal is between 50 to 100 & so my dosage was adjusted & several months later the shaking stopped. So it’s good to keep up with your bloodwork cause you sure don’t want the shaking in your arms like I had. Hope you’re okay. Your friend in Texas, Becky
