Ask your neurologist about getting off Dilatin and see if there's an alternative. I was on Dilantin for years and when I switched neurologist they took me off of it because it causes osteoporosis and is hard on the teeth.

I have done better with my seizure with Keppra, 25 years seizure free. The only side effect is that it makes me short tempered.

That neurologist decided to go in sleep studies last year, so I switched to another neurologist. I haven't had an EEG for years so he decided it was time for one. I had an ambulatory EEG and I had some abnormalities, but wasn't having any seizures. So he put me on Lamotrigine, which is an antidepressant and is used to control seizures. Since I've been on it, it has calmed the side effects of Keppra and in a much better mood.

Ask about Lamotrigine and get off Dilantin.

Lesley, I have received negative feedback from many people about Dilantin. It has worked well for me regarding controlling seizures (none since late 2005). The effects on my gums is somewhat noticeable, however, understandable after so long. There hasn’t been any effect on my bones as far as I know. I am now 59 years old. What is your opinion?

Keppra tends to have fewer side effects. Sometimes, they give you that medicine, and then if the seizures are stopped, they will take the other medicine away for a better future. Keppra does have anger issues, watch for this, but most of them don't get that one. This medicine is more effective in the long term than other medicines. Ask the doctors these questions. Keppra was the one medicine that they left me on long-term, post-surgery. I am now almost 11 years seizure-free.

I've found the older medications have worked better on my epilepsy which I've had now for 51 years. I was diagnosed with Osteoporosis in 2018 but on weekly meds for this. I go to physio to help with the back pain and make sure I see the dentist every 6 months.
