Has anyone had their post-ictal phase get worse as they age? I always had a long post-ictal phase, but was able to answer all questions posed to me, speak coherently, and have a fairly normal thought process. Fast forward to the last few seizures I have had, I am unable to keep a thought in my head, answer any question, or speak in any coherent way. It terrifies me, and I worry it will only become worse. I am also scared I will remain that way and never come out of my post-ictal phase.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member, sorry to hear of what you are going through. I understand it though. I have been going through post-ictal after i was diagnosed at 18 months but didn't feel it until i was 6 years old. I will be 69 soon and still a youngster. Being a Centenarian seems to be the normal these days. Over the years, it was always hard to keep my thoughts after a seizure until i had an ablation surgery later in life. The surgery reduced my number of seizures, but i still have memory loss. But i don't worry about my memory like i used to because i use a recorder app from my phone and keep pencil and paper tablet with me all the time. Try not to worry so much as your seizures may not get worse. The seizures may level off as doctors would say. It depends on the type of seizures a person has; do you feel a change in the control of your seizures from your meds? As we age medications adjustments may be needed. I felt changes all the time when i was little. But according to doctors, that is to be expected as i get older. Diet also plays a role also. I hope things will improve and you will feel better soon.

I do feel the aging process definitely affects our episodes and the aftermath. It takes longer for our older bodies to fully recover. We can take steps to help make it easier for our bodies by eating healthier, staying physically active, keeping our minds sharp, and managing our stress with meditation, relaxation exercises, journaling, etc. “Feel Blessed, Not Stressed”!

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member and @A MyEpilepsyTeam Member Sorry for the confusion. "Bear" has absolutely nothing to do with a seizure. When I use "bear," I mean it is hard to deal with. I was trying to say that seizures are difficult, or a "bear" to deal with. I am so sorry for the confusion. Bears are difficult to deal with, and where I grew up, using "bear" was better than swearing. If you have any other questions, I will gladly answer them. I know I don't explain things very well.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member - I have tonic-clonic seizures and don't have an aura. My medications keep my seizures pretty well controlled, but I have a breakthrough seizure about every 2-3 years. The last 3 seizures I have had have been over the last 1.5 years. The other problem that I have is that I am allergic to or cannot take so many of the current AEDs, and the AEDs remaining are not for tonic-clonic seizures. My medications are working as well as they can, but it is devastating when I become coherent enough to realize I have had another seizure.

I feel it depends on the seizure activity you have. Now I hardly ever have those feelings since hardly have seizures now. When I did have more severe seizures then now, I commonly had those feelings then now.
