Use Of Gabapentin
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I was given Gabapentin for pain after surgery and I found that it did nothing but make me fall asleep which is why I may have been given the medication - who knows. Anyone out there has experience with Gabapentin as a pain killer??

WOW ! I just learned some new info.about this generic medication. It’s not a generic for just one medication. There are three different brands , it substitutes. Neurontin ( AED ). Gralise helps with neuropathic Pain and Shingles . Then there’s Horizant . It’s used for Leg Syndrome and Nerve Pain , caused from Herpes

Yup. ICK! ! I threw it away before I was done with the prescription. What galls me is I know money is still made somewhere on something that was worthless to me in a time of need,

Gabapentin (Neurontin(sp?)) Is a nerve pain medication and also can be used for seizures (however it's not really used much anymore for seizures like it used to)... gabapentin is commonly given when someone states they do not want to he given a narcotic for pain management...the biggest side effect is drowsiness...it can be used for diabetic neuropathy, restless leg syndrome, nerve damage (especially after major surgeries or amputations)...I take it in addition to my Keppra (2000mg twice a day), Vimpat (200mg twice a day), and my gabapentin dose is pretty high (600mg four times a day), but I also have nerve damage from a partial amputation of one of my fingers, plus nerve damage from when I shattered my wrist and they needed to place some plates, screws and create a joint space in my wrist and sever some of the nerves in the process...it makes me pretty sleepy, but if you try and push through the tiredness, you eventually get used to the medication and wont get so tired. But at the same time, don't try and push through so much that you end up having a seizure from being so tired. You know your body, and if you can no longer push through it then definitely go take a nap.
