What Do You Think: Do Our Seizures Get Worse Over Time?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Or do our meds become less effective over time? Or does something else cause our seizures to come back after they’ve been under control?

I think it's different per person, my were not stable before and after the test and meds docs etc, they are more stable than before and I am ok with that. My opinion

My seizures haven't worsened as I got older. I was diagnosed with premenopause at the age of 43 and will turn 47 this year in May. The last seizure I had was back in April 2023 and before this one was in May 2021. The point I am making is that they state that hormonal changes can cause and trigger seizures, but it hasn't affected me too much thus far. My last EEG that was done is last year and the doctor tried to state at my follow-up appointment that I was having seizures around my head. This is kind of weird and the neurologist didn't make sense on what he was saying. I am more of a precise and clear type of person in which I am educated. The neurologist that I was referred to wasn't clear to my satisfaction and I don't like him. I will see a new neurologist in March of this year. My whole point is that the hormonal changes haven't affected me just yet at my age. I do my very best to take care of my health and stay away from the causes and triggers of seizures.

One question at a time:

My seizures got worse as I got older.

I never noticed a med becoming less effective.

I went four years seizure-free. Then my sister and mom died and they're back. Later I went three years seizure-free. Then my dad died and they're back again.

Sometimes, sometimes and sometimes - in response to your three questions. So many factors! And each of us is unique.

Great articles here! They can help. As can a journal to document your condition and assist in discerning all these issues.

Some meds I was on became less effective over the years. They worked well for 6 or 7 years and then I switched. What was working well in high school and college was trileptal and zonegram. So when they stopped working well we added keppra and lamictal and stopped zonegram. I had less seizures on that combo. But still had seizures. I ended up getting a RNS (neuropace) implant which decreased seizures even more to almost none. So, yes, over the years I think meds can become less effective. Maybe your doctor can suggest a change to help if your seizures are getting worse.
