Living On Your Own
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Do many of you live on your own? What made your choice to do so? Also, did it depend on the type or amount of seizures you were having?

I'm 31 living with my dad and step mom. Ive been living with them for 4 years since ive had epilepsy. They support me very well which I'm greatful for. My dad drives me to and from work every day and on the weekend take me somewhere to meet up with friends or family. But there are many other things I'd like to get to and be independent. My seizures are for the… read more

Thank you for the responses. My home is not near anything I can walk to. To uber to work is over $30 each way. There is no public transpiration that I am aware of. Like I said, my dad will drive me to and from work almost every day unless he has something where he cannot. Then I have to find a ride or use Uber. I love going to the Gym and I am unable to. My human interaction is very low with not being able to get anywhere easily.
As for my actual living situation I live in a house with two chain smokers and they drink every day. The smoke is terrible and I use to drink a lot. I no longer do because of epilepsy and I don't like being around it. I live in one small room and we all have to share the rest of the house.
I am grateful for their support, but I want to be in a different environment and or have my own place. I know having seizures is difficult to be on your own and sometimes you do not even know if you have them unless someone tells you. That has happened to me a few times.

I appreciate more feedback.

I only have one or two seizures per month but I still live with my parents in my 40’s. I can’t drive nor work much

I was living on my own at 24 years old. My mom felt i should have my own place. It didn't depend on how many seizures i had (4 each month), my mom felt i can do it. I wasn't driving and had to use public transportation to go to work in Silicon Valley from San Francisco every day. I didn't have much support as i was told that i had to make it work the best you know how. And i did make it work. If i can do it, you can also with your parents support.
