To anyone whose seen one of these, particularly loved ones who've seen many.

I used to have a crack in my skull feeling for the next 24hrs after I'd had one when I didn't realize yet that I'd had epilepsy, that the seizures were not diabetic (I have type 1 that was named the reason for tons of seizures.) I've been diagnosed about 1 or 2yrs I think, and now it is plain and clear that I'd had a seizure only because my tongue is shredded for the next day or two every single time. I've probably had… read more

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , Yes, I have had seizures in my sleep where I’ve bitten my mouth. I have TMJ where I grind my teeth when I sleep & a couple years or so ago the mouth guard that my dentist made finally broke & I didn’t have any insurance to go see him. The over the counter ones were to big & so I just did without. Due to my TMJ, at times I bite my cheeks. A couple years ago I had a seizure in my sleep & woke up with my bottom left side of my lip swollen, numb & sore & it hurt so bad that I went to see my Family doctor but she said there wasn’t anything she could do but recommended putting ice on it to help the swelling. Then a few months later I had another seizure in my sleep where I bit my bottom lip really bad but that time I also bit my tongue. It hurt. In late 2022 my disability was approved & so in June 2023 my Medicare started & I was able to see my dentist & they made me a new mouth guard & I recently got that picked up. So you could look into having your dentist make you a mouth guard. I will warn you, your insurance may or may not help to pay for it & so it’s possible that it could be expensive but if you want to stop biting up your mouth when you have a seizure in your sleep, that likely will help. Good luck. Your friend in Texas, Becky

Team member @A MyEpilepsyTeam Member has nocturnal seizures for several years and has waken up with her mouth chewed up. Her dentist was able to make a mouth guard to help.

I have nocturnal and also Tonic clonic seizures (plus absence and generalised focal), nocturnal seizures occur during your sleeping and sometimes you bite your tongue 👅 or even the inner cheek.
Tonic Clonic seizures are more serious and used to be known as Grand mal seizures, you have jerking of your body, falling down, losing consciousness and sometimes even stop breathing 😮‍💨 for a while (it’s happened to me and my face turned blue) or if it lasts more than 5 minutes, then call emergency 🚨 immediately plus another time to call emergency is if there’s a cluster of seizures (when they occur frequently not long after the earlier one).
