Psychosis And Epilepsy
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

About 3 years ago I had a psychotic break and now i here voices and see things that arent really there. I was curious if this could be link with epilepsy? My neruologist thought it could of been a side effect but now that im off of that med and on a new one nothing has changed. Just curious. Still trying to cope with my new normal.

Actually, it can be either depending upon your situation. It can come as a "bonus" along with Epilepsy just like Paranoia and quite a few other mental disorders. And having these "bonus" disorders only makes it more difficult to control your stress levels and thus avoid triggering seizures.

This is so heavily on my mind!!
In may after my seizures had changed in nature and hallucinations was one of the change but there were others. I notice before the seizures I was so depressed. So when the seizures started again and even my family said something is not right but I chopped it up to the game and said it’s a different kind of seizure even got on here and some people said they saw things with the seizures but this is so not not normal
So scary. I even thought back to March when I was sick with my lungs for a while no seizures but was hull I sting , seeing things that weren’t there!
So I call crying the nurse leaving messages for my neurologist. Then my visit to neurologist I tell him I’m seeing things that’s not there I’m taking off running in the dark out of my house because I saw and heard something that scared me so bad. He tells me and has always told me he thought a therapist would help because he new of my anxiety and stress but hallucinations? This is really bothering me. I’ve always on and off talked to therapist because of anxiety, depression, ptsd etc.
So my seizures starts decreasing after I was out on vimpat. It’s much better. So I’m lying in the bed one night and I see something that’s not there!!!
I see things with eyes open and with eyes closed I was so embarrassed I didn’t tell my husband so now I’m like something is not right. I have mental illness in my family. So my therapist tells me Saturday I’m going to refer you to a psychiatrist. And I think I need one had one before but treated me for the old things I really believe I will have a new diagnosis 😔
I thought about psychosis and do many other things. My sister said she was always afraid for me that I would have a nervous break down I told her it I hadn’t already had one. Lord I just know I need help
I know this is not normal. So glad you shared this!!!
Iill share more later it’s so much with this❤️😔🙏🏾

I do believe that's when my Dr at the time put me into lamotragine cause I have been through a few of them and I know there's at least 3 that just kept me down and angry all the time my wife thankfully knows me well enough to know the difference between me and the pills and I do believe I was on carbomezapine when I had the 7 seizures. Carbomezapine made me want to sleep ALL the time. And my wife was very worried had my parents come in from out of state to help her and the kids. Anymore she can usually see it in my face when I start to go into a seizure and typically doesn't let me go more than 2 granmal til she calls for help but now we are only a mile away from hospital and 1/4 mile from fire/ambulance building. Much better chances of getting them quickly and we no longer live in the sh**ty city anymore I was on the outskirts of Detroit when I had those 7 seizures. And don't quote me on the pills I was on, my wife is my memory and she's snoozing right now but yeah I have to have her in with me when I go to any Dr and my current neurologist tried telling us she wasn't going back with me and I told her I have to have her she's my memory and without my memory there's no point in being there. They haven't questioned it since my first visit as the doctor asked me the first few questions about my seizures and my wife started saying something about them and the Dr told her she needs for me to answer. I lose memory of 5 to 30 minutes prior and up to 1 hour after so the Dr asked me and I shrugged my shoulders and I looked at my wife and repeated the Dr question went on like that for about 3 questions and she started asking my wife directly lol. And I haven't had more than 1 in a really long time til a couple weeks ago when I had those 2 back to back. Thanks for looking out for me as well as your advice

Must say from my point of view it's gotta be linked to seizures. I've had kinda similar experiences but I have very little recollection as to what was going on around me. 1st 1 my wife told me (we were shopping with our 6 and 2 year olds) that I ran up behind her, hugged onto her arm and whispered to her "there's a angry monkey shaking it's fist at me" as I looked back at the freezers. She abandoned the shopping cart got me to the car and she said I fell into granmal just as she sat me down. My memory of it was out shopping then next thing I know I was at home thought I was sleeping but she had to explain to me what happened. 2nd 1 Florida I remember little bits and pieces of, she had to tell me what I did for the most but I only remember kicking my buddies front door in, my wife pinning me down, trying to break handcuffs, then I 'woke up' I was sitting in a big room the setup I thought I was in jail but it was a mental hospital where the Dr said it was cause of seizures. I guess 1 of the big things I did with no memory is being really polite my wife said I was talking to the lady cop "ma'am excuse me ma'am." cop "yes mr.----?" me "you're a ----ing b***h!" She said I did that repeatedly and trust I don't consciously do anything to antagonize a cop as years prior to seizures I was young enough not to care but old enough to learn a lesson. I personally felt I am losing my mind and the Dr down there was crazy himself linking it back to seizures I had a hard time believing that and just not too long ago I threw that out there and a few people on here responded with similar stories so I went about 9 years not knowing for sure

I don't mean a positive because I am indicating some conditions that potentially come along to some who develop Epilepsy. I am not sure which of these are common in people who have non-Epilepsy Seizure Disorders. Paranoia is one of those for me. This is an especially bad combination with the fact that I am bad (perception wise) in reading the reactions of others. There are other mental disorders which are can come to those who develop Epilepsy, but this is an example from my personal experience and thus easy to recall from what I had read about the fact that there are certain mental disorders that can develop in a person at the same time as Epilepsy does.

There is also the abnormal state of my memory shift from short-term memory to long-term memory in as fast as a few seconds. A normal human being does not have the shift happen until they go to sleep and reach a certain point in the sleep cycle.
