Has Anyone’s Doctors Suggested They Take Prenatal Vitamins?
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

So my neurologist has had me taking Vitamin D, B12, and Folic Acid. She once mentioned taking prenatal vitamins (though I’m not planning on getting pregnant yet), and I kind of brushed it off. Then last time I saw her she said right that the end that I was taking prenatal vitamins, which kind of threw me off but I went with it. (She’s scary and I’m looking for a new neurologist - otherwise I would have asked about it). Is anyone else’s doctor having them take prenatal vitamins (not due to… read more

I was told the same thing. And that taking more does not hurt you it helps you by both my regular doctor, my ob, and neurologist. I take vitamin D, B-12, Muli, Zinc, and Selenium to sleep better. ;)

I was advised to take them as they have more of the amounts of nutrients that I need because sometimes the medication you are on can deplete the nutrients.

i am a guy and get nothing to do with prenatal vitamins but i am a health nut. the 6 main things for pregnancy vitamins are folic acid, iron, calcium, vitamin d, dha, and iodine. i take all but the iodine. i think your dr only wants to sell stuff. iron is in b12 so... you got 3-6 (if you are taking d, b12, and folic acid) then you are good.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member, About 5 years or so ago I began seeing a new Neurologist after seeing my Pediatric Neurologist for just over 30 years. I take Depakote & that my Pediatric Neurologist put me on & the adult Neurologist I had started seeing asked if I knew that it has a chance of causing Osteoporosis & I said no & he had me do a bone density test & that showed I have Osteopenia in my left hip. He recommended I take Vitamin D. I began seeing a new Neurologist in November since my current insurance doesn’t cover that other Neurologist. I told the new Neurologist about getting the Osteopenia due to the Depakote & she wants me to continue the Vitamin D also. So I take a Vitamin D, a Calcium Vitamin, a multi-Vitamin & an iron pill. When my Pediatric Neurologist put me on the Depakote he told me to let him know if I ever wanted to get pregnant cause apparently the Depakote can hurt the baby. I’m not married & don’t think I want kids (I’m 41). I took Zarontin years ago as a kid with my Mysoline . But with the Zarontin & your other med, I don’t know if your Neurologist might be encouraging you to take the Vitamins to help reduce bone loss. I don’t take Vitamin B. But that’s why they want me taking the Vitamin D but have never phrased it as prenatal vitamins. Good luck. Your friend in Texas, Becky
