A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I wanted to know if anyone has ever asked their Dr about using natural substances to assist with reducing stress w would decrease seizures. I'm considering it. I know bacopa tryptophan and passion flower are just some.

Hello! In my experience the neurologists I have met are unwilling to even consider a wholistic approach to treatment. I understand that- given that they already don't really fully understand how the drugs they prescribe work (or not) and therefore can't have a definite idea of how other stuff may or may not interact. It's basically just trial and error, what works for one may not work for someone else.

Every person is unique.

For me what works is to try and get outside of my head as much as possible, listening to music, try to exercise as best I can, do something I like.
Mindfulness and meditation are wonderful tools to help reduce stress. And they don't cost anything! Time and patience. Just REALLY listening to your favourite music can be a form of mediation! That and making healthy dietary changes to make sure I give my body the best tools to work with I feel is probably for me more impactful than any one supplement on its own could be.

Feeling as if I am making an effort to take control but still "taking the time to smell the roses", focus on the positive, on life and things outside of my health has been extremely successful in reducing worry for me.
I hope you have a great day/ evening! x

I would encourage you to try CBD oil. Its legal and has no THC. I do see my kids benefit from it in terms of anxiety, behavior, overall calmness, etc. I do see where it has helped my son with med side-effects as well. Make sure its a high quality one though.

I went for a long term medical check with the chemist at my GP and I mentioned it to her and she wouldn’t even have a conversation about it saying it’s illegal and that’s it, I was quite angry that’s what led me to come on here to find if it’s the same for other people, I would have thought she would at least have listened to what I had to say

Hey guys, the best natural substance I can advise is marijuana any type oils, wax, the actual flower, this doesn’t really help with my epilepsy but it stops nearly all of my side affects from epilim, lamictal and keppra, It has made my life so much easier and I feel it helps with depression from those tablets, exceptionally well, has anyone else tried? Has it helped anyone else? Would love to hear your input or answer any questions

I've tried St. John's Wort in the past, for anxiety. It didn't interact with Tegretol, the medication I was taking. I'm not sure if it helped that much with the anxiety. I've been taking Valerian Root for insomnia, for about a year. It doesn't interact with the Lyrica I'm taking. I've tried [[treatment:Melatonin:5526d0531fcaa353cc0029f5]] for insomnia, but it just makes me feel uneasy and it doesn't help me sleep better.
