Deborah, I avoid as many carbs as possible daily. What JeffC said isn't correct. I drink coffee everyday the caffeine doesn't affect me at all, broccoli isn't a problem either. Lime, grapefruit in moderation is totally fine, but alcohol I cut off completely no need for that at all. Some high carb items to avoid is white cane sugar, anything with wheat like all types of store bought bread they all contain wheat or white flour. It is a learning curve and it seems overwhelming but eventually you will get it. You will be reading a lot of labels and learning ingredients and chemicals to avoid like soy, many oils that bad for you, high fructose corn syrup (hidden sugar). But you will be eating healthier and you will feel much better and you will have a lot more energy.
Many things I once thought were triggers like lack of sleep for example is a trigger when I was taking meds, but that is no longer the case. Finding a specialist to believe ketosis works will not be easy, because most don't believe it works and most were never educated about it in any depth. I had to figure it out on my own, but I do have a background in neuroscience, epilepsy, and seizures so that helped.

I changed my diet over a year ago to see if the ketogenic diet LCHF (Low Carb, High Fat) would work for me to control seizures. It took many months to see results but it was worth the wait for me. This is the best seizure control I've had in over 3 decades and by the end of this month I should be off any medicine I was taking for seizures. Good bye to side effects from drugs and hello to seizure control by using only food. Most specialists don't believe food can play such an important role, but I can tell you for a fact for me food works better than any medicine I was taking and it has no side affects like you get from any of these medicines.

My neurologist put me on basically a cardiac diet. Lots of fruits and veggies. No caffeine or sweets. You know none of the good stuff

I had to change my diet when I became Lactose Intolerant in 2010. As a result, I realized dairy and chocolate were a major trigger for my seizures. I started keeping a food diary to look for any other patterns that might trigger my seizures.
