I took tegretol for complex partial seizures for about 15 years. It worked on the seizures for less than a year. I started developing headaches, which got worse over the years. Right before my brain surgery, I was having headaches almost on a daily basis for about a year. While taking medication for an upper respiratory infection, I ended up in the emergency room with toxic levels of tegretol. It was at the hospital that I met a neurologist who referred me to Keck of USC neurologist group, where I had my surgery. he seizures went away after surgery, I would occasionally still get headaches. I also suffered from persistent stomach pain, while on tegretol. The pain went away after surgery. I stopped taking tegretol 3-5 years after surgery. I rarely have headaches anymore.
