Members shared deeply divided experiences around driving with epilepsy, with many describing the painful loss of independence that comes from surrendering their licenses, while others explained why they continue to drive despite medical advice or legal restrictions, often by lying on applications or withholding their diagnosis from doctors and the DMV. Several members emphasized practical strategies for safer driving, including recognizing auras to pull over in time, limiting driving to short distances or daylight hours, avoiding highways or heavy traffic, and refusing to drive on days when they feel off or shaky. A recurring theme was the tension between personal safety, legal responsibility, and the crushing isolation that comes from losing mobility, especially for those in rural areas with no public transportation, leading some members to prioritize independence and employment over strict adherence to medical or legal guidelines while others chose not to drive out of fear of hurting someone else.

I live in the state of
Missouri & the last
Seizure I had was a
Grand Mal & I didn't have "any warning!"
I had stopped driving because I
feel that if I hit or
killed someone, I'd
never forgive myself. I worked at
a Veterans Home for 30yrs & I've seen men that were in 'bad mental or physical
condition.' I worked
in Physical Therapy, as an Aide II.

I get a really strong aura before having a seizure, so I'll pull off the road before one occurs.

I don't drive, but I
walk a lot!
What helps me is
I can walk almost
anywhere in town!

As I do not have a car now, I do not drive. But I am saving up for a car so I can drive again. I do miss driving. Buses do not go everywhere I want to go and also the buses are so slow in coming.
