I'm in the process of having my surgery and I'm only two weeks from my date. Tonight at work, a co-worker made a comment where he said "I'm so tired I could drop here and seize" during a conversation about how tired he was from a busy shift at the Applebee's. I tink most people dont mean anyharm when they talk about epilepsyand most will do there best to help if somene has a seizure,at least in my opinion, trouble is always seems to be some person that has to crude and trow in some rude comments,.
When it comes to making a joke about epilepsy & seizures it is just another part of the problem that people need to deal with. I take it with a grain of salt-and don't give a person the pleasure to see any reaction from me.
I'm very different. I hope people don't take this with offence, I joke around all the time about my epilepsy. Quite often staff as well as myself will say what your co worker said or complain if a light keeps flickering that it's so annoying they are going to have seizures or management is going to cause us to have a seizure. It's probably because I'm a nurse and we always joke I have also joked with Drs, any medical staff. We deal with pts who have seizures all the time and are very serious /,concerned and professional when treating them. For me it's my way and other health workers cope but in general I just think it's just a saying with others. I believe their aim is definitely not to be offensive.
I joke all the time about my seizures and Epilepsy.
I could be watching a tv show or movie and scene may come up where they hit their head very hard. I would joke that the actor or actress may start having seizures or Epilepsy.
I'd probably go "epilepsy is not a joke" and walk away. You could make a bigger deal out of it but I don't think the guy meant a big deal out of it. I think you have to take it case by case and I've only been dealing with it four years. It sounded soft to me.
