Strobe Lights
A MyEpilepsyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I'm going to a concert and they said that there was going to be a strobe light and I was wondering if anybody had a seizure after watching one?

I've been to concerts and events also. I have had seizures during them , but for me I get overly excited and I short circuit my brain , which makes me seizure. But that doesn't stop me from going to another one,.

For your situation I suggest you try wearing sunglasses. That may reduce the chances of seizuring.

That depends on the type. When I was tested, I was put through a strobe test, and thankfully it didn't cause anything (I'm still careful around strobe lights though). If you have photosensitivity, be very careful. There's not much you can do, except hope you don't get triggered.

The lights and noise always have bad outcomes for me....but my number 1 problem with concerts is that i get over excited n my brain short circuits.

You can if you have a type of epilepsy that causes Photosensitivity. I have a type of Epilepsy/seizure disorder that can cause photosensitive seizures. For example before my diagnosis and after my diagnosis when I was a teen my seizures were highly triggered by strobes and flashing/flickering light. So after my diagnosis I was told I could not go in arcades, haunted houses, fun houses, movie theaters, play laser tag or even ride my bike. Which explained why I would suddenly fall and ended up finding myself either flat on my back or in a bush. But, as I got older it got a lot better. I have not been adventurous in going in a haunted house, fun house, playing laser tag or seeing a concert but have tried arcades and have gone to casino's and have done great. Though from what my adult neurologist said as those that were photosensitive as a kid, pre-teen, or teenager get less photosensitive when they get older in their adult years. Especially If your on a medication that is used for photosensitivity. Along with eliminating other triggers such as sleep deprivation or a lack of sleep(which is common for those w/ JME). Though not sure about other forms of Epilepsy/seizure disorders that have photosensitivity as a trigger. I do know a recommendation I was also told to lessen photosensitivity was to wear tinted blue lense glasses. Not sure if it works but, you can try it. Or ask your neurologist if your unsure if your photosensitive. He/or she will be able to tell you or give you an EEG that uses a strobe to provoke you to see if your photosensitive. Not everyone is Photosensitive. I believe some people put warning signs on things to help those that are unsure.
