All AED's have unpleasant side effects - from psychological to physical such as weight gain and weakness.
If there is no evidence that they are improving your epilepsy, would you follow the safe doctor's legal approach and stay on meds, or simply wean yourself off them and see if something bad happens in the future.
Prescribing AED's is basically like throwing a variety of things at a wall in the hope that one will stick. It's not much more advanced than that.
Which approach do you prefer?

I would not pay attention to a School GP, who I think told you to go "Cold Turkey". I know some people stop having seizures naturally. Find a Neurologist or Epileptologist who is very observant, can… read more
Tryna is on 2000mg of zorontin and 4000mg of Keppra, my daughter also has stickler syndrome which is a connective tissue and joint disease which has stunted her growth. At the age of 17 she is 4ft 6. She is developmentally delayed with a mentality of about a 6 yr old. Tryna is our happy laughing and usually hyperactive child. Now she gets home and is very quiet and withdrawn, little or no smiles and usually no laughing. I have talked to her to see if something was bothering her and she just says… read more
I’m keeping you guys in prayer!
My son does not like all the side effects and is not wanting to add a 3rd. Incredible to think this is best option. Is it possible the 2nd med (Lamictal) that was added has caused the increase in his seizures? Shouldn't we try to back off of that first?
There are many of us , where one medication won’t work to control our seizures of the type of Epilepsy we have.
I’m on 5 medications, with the DBS ( Deep Brain Stimulation ) and still have seizures… read more

So my neurologist has had me taking Vitamin D, B12, and Folic Acid. She once mentioned taking prenatal vitamins (though I’m not planning on getting pregnant yet), and I kind of brushed it off. Then last time I saw her she said right that the end that I was taking prenatal vitamins, which kind of threw me off but I went with it. (She’s scary and I’m looking for a new neurologist - otherwise I would have asked about it). Is anyone else’s doctor having them take prenatal vitamins (not due to… read more
I was told the same thing. And that taking more does not hurt you it helps you by both my regular doctor, my ob, and neurologist. I take vitamin D, B-12, Muli, Zinc, and Selenium to sleep better. ;)
My daughter is on Lamotrigine and Zonisamide for absence seizures and that doesn't seem to control them. I was reading about this medicine and was wondering about it.
SusanLarsoLong:
has your husband ever been on TEGRETOL ????
Ask his doctor about it~ Never had any side effects while on it.
Hi everyone,.
Went to my Neuro yesterday. I will be stopping Vimpat 100mg BID and starting maybe Topamax.
Vimpat isn't controlling my seizures. I started it a few weeks ago and I already gained 10lbs and loosing my hair like crazy. Which sucks because I just lost my baby weight from pregnancy and started growing my hair back from breastfeeding
Anyway, what are your experiences with Topamaz? Going to be on 50mg BID
Kindra it was just an added bonus, you lose a few extra pounds in the beginning it doesn't continue dang it. But it does keep my migraines down. The only time I get them now is after a bad seizure.
