Members responded warmly to the question about having seizures during sleep without realizing it, with many confirming that nocturnal seizures are very real and often go unnoticed by the person experiencing them. Several members shared that they only discovered their sleep seizures after EEGs or VEEGs, while others learned about them through family members or partners who witnessed the episodes. A recurring theme was the comfort of having a supportive person nearby, along with encouragement to speak with a neurologist and request an EEG.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , Most but not all of my seizures happen in my sleep. Sometimes I do & sometimes I don’t know that I’ve had a seizure unless I notice something odd or someone witnesses it, like my Mom or stepdad who I still live at home with. One time I was sleeping & my stepdad heard some noises in my room, like I might be having a seizure & so he got my Mom & sure enough I was. One I woke up confused & moving my hands around there on the bed beside me, like I was looking for something & I soon snapped out of it. A few years ago I woke up to find myself on the floor beside my bed & I was sliding my finger across the side of the bed. A few years ago I had a seizure in my sleep with my first loss of bladder & I apparently walked to my bathroom & removed my feminine pad & went back to bed with no memory of any of it. Another time I woke up from a nap with a different pair of PJ pants on & no memory of changing pants. What’s hard is I have TMJ where I grind my teeth when I sleep & so I must wear a mouth guard when I sleep, even though I wear a mouth guard I still bite my cheeks a little sometimes & so when I do, it’s hard to know if I had a seizure or if the bite marks are just bites from grinding my teeth. But I have had extra pain in the cheeks sometimes & so that’s when I wonder if it was a seizure. But those are just some of the examples that I’ve dealt with. I might have more than I really know about in my sleep. Your friend in Texas, Becky

I'm jealous ! I sleep 3 - 4 hours a night lately I had a seizure in the shower & split up above my right eye & somehow saverly bruised ribs on my right side anyway I'm laying in bed feels a knife stuck in my right rib cage it took a day after the shower I got up the next morning took my shower got done was by the mirror & my right eye lid was swollen out & wide open I put a peace of gauss on & made it untill the after noon my ribs swelled out at the bottom of my rib cage I said to my wife usually I can handle the pain but I can't stop my eye lid to stop bleeding & my rib cage feels like I was hit with a sludge hammer my ribs is what I couldn't handle so she took me to the ER & the Dr did a cat scan & MRI on my head & chest & showed me the X-rays & it shows my right ribs where I fractured 5 ribs last month but he said what I ended up with now was a severe bruising of that area over 4 that were fractured last month that's why the pain was so bad , he said broken ribs are less painful then bruised ribs , I put my arms up & said take your best shot !! He looked at me & & laughed & said I'll be right back then he came back with a prescription for a med for swelling & told me to go to a pharmacy & get some Tylenol but I seen your messages & figured I say hi & hope your are doing well if you feel like you need someone to talk with I'll be here alright have a good night chat with you soon hon 💜💜💜💜🙏
