I have fallen many times and have hurt myself. It's very discouraging. I am going to a neurologist on Friday to see if a device such as VNS...etc. will help.

Hallo Kelly ., this be William .. I be suffering atonic "drop" seizures since I be a bairn .. wee lad .. I be told they be from premature birth at 7 months .. ach they be miserable and truly frightening for my wee wife Jen ., thankfully she be strong ,, and we be together since childhood., so she use to me having them ., many children suffer these as I did ., and many do grow out of them as the brain grow ., unfortunately I did not ., last one was at age 15 .. yet I be suffering one in the shower a few days ago ., as I be an amputee .. losing my entire left keg at 15 due to sepsis from meds ..my wife always shower with me to keep me safe ., as easy for me to lose my balance .. I be dealing with some severe pain and we be thinking that cause this seizure ., I just be passing out and drop like a rag doll .. Jen catch me and able to get me onto the shower chair ., she hold me fast till seizure past ., a wee minute or two ., and when I be able ., she help me to bed .. so ., these be a real hazard for many on here .. no meds really help .. what DO help be a loving supportive soiuse, partner, family member or friend we can be counting on to be there for us .,., my Jen be saving me many a broken bone or worse injury ., as she be there with me and keep me safe ., I did wear a helmet as a child .. yet they did go away in me until I be losing my leg ., the stress from all of that cause them to return ., yet not for a bit until this .. neurologist think may just be isolated incident .. yet with epilepsy who can know? Maybe a VNS will be helping you ., as some have been helped ., we send hugs and prayers this be working for you Kelly ., William and JenπŸ’œπŸ’™πŸ•Š

It sounds like you're asking about atonic seizures (sometimes spelled "aronic") β€” and yes, they are very real and very challenging to live with. The discouragement you're feeling is completely understandable.

Atonic seizures cause a sudden loss of muscle tone, making the body go limp without warning. This can mean:

- Dropping the head suddenly
- Slumping or falling from a seated position
- Collapsing completely if standing or walking

Because they happen so fast, there's often no time to brace yourself, which is why injuries to the face, head, and body are so common. Many MyEpilepsyTeam members have shared similar experiences with falls and injuries β€” broken noses, head injuries, and damaged walls are mentioned more than once. You are definitely not alone in this.

Some members have found helmets and knee pads helpful for day-to-day protection while managing drop attacks. Bringing up VNS and other device options with your neurologist on Friday is a great step. Medication adjustments can also sometimes help reduce the frequency of atonic seizures. Going in with specific questions about your fall history will really help your neurologist understand the full picture. Wishing you a productive appointment! 🀞
