A lack of oxygen caused my epilepsy. The umbilical cord wrapped around my neck (Nuchal cord) and I also inhaled Meconium (poo) and suffered birth asphyxiation (HIE) when I was born which suffocated my brain cells killing them. The dead brain cells caused my epilepsy.
I also suffered a traumatic head injury before I was 2 years old which caused my brain to bleed. The blood deprived my brain of oxygen and suffocated more brain cells which is the secondary cause of my epilepsy.
@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member I have had total control of seizures since 2000.
If a family member like your mom and dad or grandparents had Apple Epilepsy, you could inherit it
Then there are the other reasons of Epilepsy from head injuries. Like injuries to the brain, from a car accident, too many bumps to the head and many other ways of bumping our injuring your head.
Cysts or tumors removal from the brain, can cause someone to become diagnosed with epilepsy.
I have a family history of it. My 4 other siblings were healthy. I had the same surgery in 2000. It reduced my seizures. Did your surgery help?
I wasn't sure what caused my epilepsy. It could have been my birth weight, 12 lbs. 9 oz., being pushed down a flight of stairs, or a 105 fever. After my temporal lobectomy, the scar tissue showed it was the fever that caused it.
