No specific foods are proven to directly cause epilepsy, but certain foods and drinks may act as seizure triggers for some people. Everyone's triggers can be different, so it's worth tracking patterns to identify personal sensitivities.

Here are some commonly reported dietary triggers to be mindful of:

- Alcohol – A very well-known trigger, especially binge drinking. Seizures can occur hours or even up to 48 hours after heavy drinking stops
- Caffeine – Found in coffee, tea, soda, chocolate, and energy drinks. High amounts can make the brain more excitable
- High-sugar foods/drinks – Can cause energy crashes and may contribute to seizure risk
- Foods that cause low blood sugar – Skipping meals or eating poorly can lead to hypoglycemia, which can trigger seizures One MyEpilepsyTeam member shared that they avoid energy drinks and caffeine entirely because they act as triggers leading to seizures.

If a pattern is noticed with a specific food, it's worth discussing with a doctor. They may recommend avoiding that food if it appears to be a provoking factor. Keeping a seizure diary can really help spot those patterns!
