Members responded to a question about how long someone should be seizure-free before driving, sharing a range of personal timelines and regional rules, from 6 months to 2 years depending on location. Several members emphasized that neurologist approval is required before getting back behind the wheel, and one member strongly noted that driving without meeting state guidelines can have serious legal consequences. A recurring theme was the importance of staying focused while driving, not assuming a cure, and appreciating every seizure-free milestone as a sign of progress rather than a finish line.

Let me also add that if you drive without meeting your states guidelines and without your doctor's approval, and you have a seizure while doing so. It IS criminal and you can go to jail for doing so. It IS a crime!!

I want anyone who has experience with epilepsy and driving to appreciate your experience. I have hydrocephalus and epilepsy from childhood in addition to my recent mental health diagnosis. I love driving and the combination of different medical issues left me unsuitable as a partner. I want anyone has epilepsy to appreciate your experience with driving.

I was able to drive after 12 months going by state law however I waited just under another 12 months before I went back to driving normally.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member, Remember, as far as being considered "Normal", remember there is NO cure for Epilepsy. Like I have been 8 years seizure free. I DON'T say I am cured. I say I am 8 years seizure free. I have known of people going decades of being seizure free and then have a seizure!

The law is 6 months to 2 years(in Michigan), When you have been seizure free long enough, you have to get permission by your Neurologist to take to the Secretary of State to legally drive!
