Members responded to a question about VNS wires being left in the body after device removal, with the overwhelming consensus confirming that this is standard medical practice. Several members shared personal experiences explaining that the wires cannot be safely removed because they sit too close to the carotid artery and vagus nerve, and over time the body grows around them. A recurring theme was reassurance that the remaining wires cause little to no discomfort, with many members encouraging others to ask their doctors questions and not be afraid of the process.

The device was removed, but the wire still remains. For me anyway.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member, how are you doing?Still having a laugh to help you feel okay? My carer I told you about has left, but I still feel laughing is the best medicine, "what happened when a cat swallowed a coin? there was money in the kitty "

That is quite true, you can have the device removed but the VNS wires will remain. I spoke with my neurosurgeon about this in 2008 prior to the surgery and this is the exact thing he stated to me. I have no problem with the device staying in my chest as I will be needing it along with the Deep Brain Stimulator device. Both items work very well to take care and manage my epilepsy at this point in time.

I do wish you well managing your epilepsy journey!
