Diagnosed at 16, now 37. Had 3 seizures while pregnant and 2 more since giving birth 9 months ago. The only medication that prevented the seizures for over 5 years was depakote. The dr switched her meds so she could become pregnant about 7 years ago, but has had breakthrough seizures, roughly 1 every 6 months. She is now home alone all day with her son. I am extremely concerned for her safety as well as the safety of my grandson. She recently had a seizure on her 1st Mother’s Day, had 2 alcohol… read more

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , I’m 47 & have had seizures since the second grade after hitting my head on the monkey bars. Around my mid teens my Pediatric Neurologist started me on Depakote & said to let him know if I ever wanted to get pregnant because it could possibly harm the baby. I have never had children & am going through menopause & still live at home with my Mom & stepdad. Most but not all of my seizures happen at home & my Mom & stepdad help me if needed. Everyone has different triggers & sometimes it’s hard to even know what caused a particular seizure. Unless I’m wrong, it sounds like your daughter is kind of in denial about her seizures, being that concerning her recent seizure you said that she had a lack of sleep & 2 alcohol drinks. Those 2 things can be possible triggers for some people. I don’t drink any alcohol, but I drink caffeine, most regular Coke, but not an extreme amount of it, but I do drink it every day when I want something to drink & I also drink water. For me, getting way too tired can possibly cause a seizure or double vision. But there’s times that I don’t know what could’ve caused a particular seizure. But being that your daughter was sleep deprived & had some alcohol & a seizure followed, it’s very possible those 2 issues could’ve been the cause of the seizure. Other team members on here usually limit their alcohol drinking if they do drink. You could talk to her doctor or nurse about the issue & see what they could suggest. Also, most Epilepsy Foundations offer support groups & you could see if your daughter would be willing to participate in that & some Epilepsy Foundations offer support groups for parents & caregivers as well. Some locations offer online and/or in person support groups. You can look up your local Epilepsy Foundation at www.epilepsy.com & most locations offer support groups, events, programs & different types of resources. Good luck & best wishes to you both & Happy belated Mother’s Day to you both. Welcome to the site. Your friend in Texas, Becky
