I used to take 4 or 5 pills four times every day but I’m drug resistant so I’ve had epilepsy nonstop for 30+ years.

Welcome.
I have focal seizure myself . I’m on 5 meds to control my seizures. I take them 3x a day.. they still don’t control my seizure 100% . A seizure sneaks out now and then. I have Refractory Epilepsy ( resistant to drugs )…

It’s probably too early to predict that with you. But keep alert. If your Dr. keeps trying old:new meds and combos. You may want to ask.
BUT ! This doesn’t meant that there isn’t the right meds for you either.

Welcome! It's great that you're reaching out — you're definitely not alone in this journey. Many people with focal seizures find themselves on combination therapy, just like you.

Keppra (levetiracetam) and Vimpat (lacosamide) are both commonly used for focal seizures. Keppra is a broad-spectrum option, while Vimpat is a narrow-spectrum medication specifically targeting focal seizures — so combining them makes a lot of sense clinically. It's actually very common to need more than one medication to get seizures under control. In fact, about 44% of people with epilepsy don't respond fully to their first treatment, and many need combinations to find the right balance.

A few things worth keeping in mind while on these medications:

- Take them consistently — missed doses are a known seizure trigger
- Watch for side effects like dizziness, fatigue, or mood changes
- Keep all your doctors informed about every medication you're taking

The good news is that 75% of people who didn't respond to their first treatment achieved remission within six years. There's real hope here! 💙
