They vary there is no set time. They can be as short as 30mins-1hr or as long as a 3 days up to two weeks.

Great question! EEG timing can vary depending on the type being done. Here's a general breakdown:
Standard (Awake) EEG
- Typically takes about 1 to 2 hours
- Electrodes are placed on the scalp to record brain activity
- It's completely painless
Sleep/Prolonged EEG
- Can run anywhere from 24 hours to several days

- This is often done as an ambulatory EEG, meaning you can go home and carry on with your normal routine while wearing the electrodes and a small recorder on your waist
Having both a wake and sleep EEG gives doctors a much fuller picture of brain activity, since seizures can behave differently depending on your sleep-wake state.
One thing worth knowing — about 50% of EEGs in people with epilepsy come back looking normal, even if seizures are happening. So if that occurs, it doesn't mean anything is being missed — more monitoring may just be needed.

Kevin, I am being scheduled for a five day EEG which will help to determine if I am having silent seizures. Possibly connected to (MTS) Mesial Temporal Sclerosis.

if I remember right when I had been awake and sleep EEG, it lasted for about four hours.
