I had a seizure at work yesterday which lasted longer than usual. I was found in the hallway mid seizure by a colleague and she said it lasted 4 to 5 minutes but more like 5 minutes. I was so tired and embarrassed I just wanted to get home. Another colleague drove me home and I just slept for about 6 hours. I was thinking about it in the evening as its not good that it last 5 minutes. My colleague who witnessed it emailed me with a witness account which I have forwarded to my epilepsy nurse. I… read more

Members rallied around someone worried about a 5-minute seizure at work, confirming it is indeed a medical emergency that can cause the brain to lose oxygen. Several members shared practical strategies including wearing medical ID bracelets, asking doctors about rescue medications like buccal midazolam, and ensuring a formal workplace seizure care plan is in place. A recurring theme was the importance of self-advocacy, with many encouraging the original poster to push for attentive medical care and to never feel alone in navigating epilepsy.

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member , I’m sorry to hear about your seizure. Yes, I’ve heard that if a seizure lasts 5 minutes or longer, a person should go to the hospital. If you want, you could let your work know that for future reference if you & your Epilepsy nurse & doctor feel that would be the right thing to do if that ever happened again. A few years we were at a restaurant & I began crying & shaking & hollering at the top of my lungs for 25 minutes straight & I could hear the waiter ask if there was anything he could do & we didn’t know what was going on & finally after 25 minutes it stopped & since it was 5pm my doctor’s office didn’t answer & so I had the cell phone number to our Epilepsy Foundation director & I texted her & told her I had a big attack or something & she said if I didn’t feel safe to go to the hospital & then called me & I had to let my Mom answer the phone because I could feel another round of hollering coming & so she said to go to the hospital & my Mom had to literally pull me out of the restaurant because I kept pulling back & so we went to the ER & they believed it was a really bad anxiety attack & from what I told my Neurologist, she agreed. The hospital gave me Ativan & I took it for the next few days as the anxiety attacks continued but not as severe but I haven’t had anything like that since then luckily. I pray your doctor can help you & do whatever they feel is necessary to help calm your seizures. Sending Thoughts, Hugs & Prayers. Take care. 🤗💜🙏🤗 Your friend in Texas, Becky

@A MyEpilepsyTeam Member my epilepsy nurse has said that my work should call and ambulance if I have a seizure lasting 5 minutes or longer, 2 seizures in a row without recovery in between or 3 seizures in 24 hours. There are just so many different staff members and not everyone is told rescue plan. Its actually upsetting me a bit as I dont want to seem like im difficult as I love my job but at the same time its my safety. I think I just feel really emotional which is usual for me after a seizure. Xx

Hallo Lydia .. first thing to be doing is getting a different neurologist ., to "raise" your dosage to what you already be on be proof he not paying attention . .. as you say .. he did not check your dosage .. in my book ., this be William btw ., this be unforgiveable .. sound like your epilepsy nurse be trying hard .. we must advocate for ourselves .. and it takes seconds to tap a computer key and check your dosage .. and all of this be stressing you out .. stress be good for none of us .. when you call to get new one .. they usually ask why you be changing .. so .. tell them the truth .. about upgrading you to dosage you already be on .. that should catch their attention .. each patient be important .. and each of us deserve competent and compassionate care .. once they realize you advocate for yourself .. they be more careful .. as our Mum use to say .. the squeeky wheel be getting the most grease ,, so ., never be afraid to "squeak" a bit .. keeps them on their toes! You deserve the best possible care Lydia .. as we all do .. sadly .. some time it be up to us to be certain we be getting that care .. we be keeping you on our minds and in our prayers .. hugs and quiet love from William and Jen 💜💙🤗🤗🕊🕊

Hallo Lydia .. this be WIlliam.. a survivor of way too many 5 minute seizures .. they be indeed a medicacl emergency .. as after 5 minutes your brain loses oxygen and damage can happen .. to prevent this you be needing both oxygen and rescue meds to stop the seizures .. Chlobazam work for me as rescue med .. as jel put on insides of my mouth to stop long seizures .. at any rate hospital be necessary to supply both of these ., also these can lead to status epilepticus .. which be a string of bad seizures .. which happen one after the other with no rest or recovery in between .. this be life threatening and must be stopped by rescue meds .. the oxygen be necessary to replace that needed by brain and heart .. I be suffering these severe seizures many times mainly due to the rare LTL ictal asystole epilepsy I be having .. we have these prescription rescue meds at home and my wife Jen take them wherever I be going .. as these long seizures can be taking my life if CPR not restore my heartbeat .. stress can cause these to occur .. as well as any other seizure .. Lydia .. please know I be worse case scenario for this .. as with my rare epilepsy it be expected .. you be doing the right thing .. setting up care plan and letting everyone at work know .. these steps be giving you peace of mind ., that help to ease the stress causing them .. Jen and me pray for you ., as this be hard to handle and scare the wits from us when it be happening.. please know on here you not be alone .. some of us suffer this and stand beside you in solidarity ., you be on top of this now Lydia ., ☺🙂because being prepared helps ease the fear . we send you heartfelt hugs and prayers from William and Jen 💜💙🤗🤗🕊🕊

I had a review with my epilepsy nurse and she is having my medication increased. My work has filled out a proper seizure plan for me which they are sending to all relevant staff which has made me feel a bit better. I do love living on my own, if it happens again then I will have a rethink of my situation. My epilepsy nurse spoke to my neurologist about the seizure and they haven't mentioned me needing a rescue medication.
