Sat in the DMV for 2 hours because "I had 2 accounts with the DMV and they needed to merge it" I sat for 2 hours. Then finially I was told I was flagged to not drive and to go to my neurologist and get the form filled out and come back before 5. I dont think people realize how hard it is to get things done with neurology. And then the triage nurse told me "you knkow patients are kinda supposed to be in charge of their own medical condition" when I complained that I was never told about this. The… read more

In Australia you lodge a Medical certificate every 12 months in the 11 years I have had a license I've done it two different ways. The first time I followed the process and lodged a form saying I can't drive and the process was ok but to get it back was a nightmare. This time I just didn't lodge the form the dr did there side of it so it details still updated.

What are people's experiences with DMV communication issues when managing epilepsy and driving privileges?

You're definitely not alone in this frustration. Many MyEpilepsyTeam members have shared similar struggles with the DMV process and getting their driving privileges sorted out.

One member described the confusion perfectly: "I have had so many stops and starts. Each time, it's been different. Now, my neurologist Googles it because he can't keep up with the changes."

The communication breakdown you experienced is unfortunately common. The DMV process requires your neurologist to fill out specific forms verifying your last seizure date and seizure type, but coordinating this between medical offices and the DMV can be incredibly challenging.

Common frustrations members share include:

- Difficulty getting timely responses from neurology offices
- Confusion about changing state requirements
- Long wait times at both the DMV and medical offices
- Lack of clear communication about being flagged or restricted

The triage nurse's comment about you being "in charge of your own medical condition" was dismissive, especially since the DMV confirmed you had no way of knowing about the flag. That's not on you.

Many members acknowledge how hard it is to navigate this system while also recognizing the importance of safety. Getting documentation from your neurologist quickly can be tough, but keeping copies of all your medical records and DMV correspondence can help prevent future mix-ups.
