For generalized seizures that occur once a year, or six months, or once a decade, do any symptoms appear a few days before the seizure that would indicate when a severe generalized seizure is coming?

Can symptoms appear days before a generalized seizure?

Yes, some people experience early warning signs called a prodrome that can occur minutes to days before a seizure. However, not everyone experiences these warning signs, and they're not always present before every seizure.

Prodromal symptoms that might appear before a generalized seizure include:

- Headache
- Anxiety
- Confusion
- Irritability or mood changes

Some people also experience auras, which are considered the first symptom of the seizure itself. Auras can bring physical, emotional, or sensory changes such as:

- Nausea
- Numbness or tingling
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Déjà vu
- Racing thoughts
- Strange feelings like fear or panic
- Phantom visions, scents, sounds, or tastes

It's important to note that even for infrequent seizures (occurring once a year, every six months, or once a decade), these warning signs may not always be present or noticeable. Tracking any patterns or symptoms you experience could help you and your healthcare team better understand your seizure activity.

i have a seizure about every 5-6 months. That doesn’t mean I don’t feel awful in between.

Years ago, if I felt a seizure coming, I would drink water and splash water on my face and take deep breaths and it would go away. Sometimes, not all the time. It feels "weird" never having seizures all the time everyday. I am still trying to get used to it even after being almost 8 years seizure free.

Out of 34 years I have made it 1 month seizure free but I never have reached 2 months without a seizure

Have you ever had a period where you were seizure-free for months or years?
